The term "swing" commonly refers to a group of partner dances that developed concurrently with the swing style of jazz music in the 1920's, 30's & 40's.
Most swing dances feature syncopated timing -- a combination of quicks and slows, that many swing dancers interpret as "trip steps" and "steps."
If you enjoy contemporary music like hip hop, jazz, blues or country, the swing dance style you will likely enjoy most is West Coast Swing. Ballroom Dance Company instructors Trina Siebert, Jason Isbell, Jimmy Ho, and Kathy Carter specialize in this style. We host west coast swing group classes Monday & Thursday nights all year, and often supplement with additional west coast swing group classes on more nights. These teachers also all teach private lessons in this style, 7 days a week at our studio. We also host west coast swing dances open to the public every Sunday night, and the 3rd Friday of each month.
If you admire the retro 1940's big band swing dance era, the swing dance style you will likely enjoy most is Lindy Hop. Ballroom Dance Company instructor Jason Isbell specializes in this style, teaching lindy hop group classes Tuesday nights, as well as private lessons 7 days a week at our studio.
If you're a beginner looking for the 'easiest' style of swing to learn, we highly recommend starting with single time swing. We provide group classes in this style almost every month: check our calendar for classes starting soon.
Finally, if you watch "Championship Ballroom Dancing" on PBS and admire the style of swing you've seen on TV, you're most likely interested in learning the east coast swing or jive.
The Ballroom Dance Company offers excellent instruction at low prices, in an elegant ballroom environment. Get some exercise, learn a new skill, meet new people, bring a date, come solo....Whichever swing style you decide on, you're sure to have fun!
